    Fraudsters are constantly on the hunt for money mules. Money mules act as intermediaries to move money that has been stolen by fraudsters, often to other countries. Fraudsters are increasingly approaching adolescents for this purpose. They contact them through channels that are popular among young people, such as Instagram, with promises of making quick and easy money. The ones who fall into this trap often do not realise they are committing a criminal offence and are putting their safety, as well as the safety of the people around them, on the line.

    With effect from 1 October 2017, Karel Van Eetvelt will become the new CEO of Febelfin and the Belgian Bankers' and Stockbroking Firms' Association (ABB-BVB). As the new CEO, he will be entrusted with the task of making Febelfin and ABB-BVB future-oriented entities. With the financial sector facing considerable challenges and change, Febelfin and ABB-BVB will have to be ready, more than ever, to help the sector deal with these new demands and to create an environment that ensures a sustainable future.

    The number of internet banking fraud cases remained at a stable level as compared to the 2014 figure. Febelfin wants to draw the attention to the need for constant vigilance as for the different kinds of fraud and also warns against a new fraud technique: bank card  phishing.

    The number of internet banking fraud cases during the first half of this year amounted to 838 for a total amount of 2.7 million EUR. Phishing is the most frequently used method. At the beginning of July, Febelfin launched a YouTube video called ‘See how easily freaks can take over your life’ in which it draws the attention to the precautions for safe internet banking. Since then, almost 500,000 visitors have already watched this video.
