In 2021, the Commission put forward a proposal for a European digital identity. Within the proposed framework, the basis is laid for a system which citizens and companies can use throughout the EU.

Users can identify themselves with this and choose which personal data they wish to share, both online and offline, with government bodies and companies throughout the EU. They will also be able to check more effectively who has which data. Concrete applications include, for example, an electronic signature for a government document, proving your identity to the police services or easily transferring data to private companies, for example to open a bank account. The financial sector is advocating a secure platform that can be widely used.
